Call for Top Down Review By DHCR Commissioner
With Tishman Speyer’s seemingly endless applications for new Major Capital Improvement rent increases continuing to pile in, all four of our elected representatives, from City Council Member on up to Congresswoman, have joined in asking the Commissioner of the Division of Housing and Community Renewal (the State agency concerned) to do a “top to bottom review” of MCIs granted to our current and former landlords, starting with the electrical rewiring of Peter Cooper Village in 2000.
Stating that many of the MCIs appear to have been rubber-stamped without proper examination, the letter, sent September 10th to DHCR Commissioner Deborah VanAmerongen, was signed by Council Member Dan Garodnick, Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh, Senator Tom Duane, and Congresswoman Caroline Maloney, joined by Tenants Association president Al Doyle.
