Join Us Sunday for a “Telephone Town Hall” with Senator Schumer on the TA’s Plan to Bid
We hope that you will join us this Sunday for the next step in our community conversation about protecting the future of Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village.
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer will be joining the Stuyvesant Town-Peter Cooper Village Tenants Association, their advisors, residents, and local elected officials for a “Telephone Town Hall” this Sunday, December 18th at 6:30pm. The event will answer residents’ questions about the TA’s recently announced proposal to partner with Brookfield Asset Management on a tenant-led, non-eviction conversion plan that would protect current residents and permanently maintain the middle-class character of this historic community.
A “Telephone Town Hall” is a community wide meeting conducted over the phone. Tenants’ questions will be fielded primarily by their legal and financial advisers from Paul, Weiss and Moelis & Co and moderated by Council Member Dan Garodnick. The call is also co-sponsored by Senator Gillibrand, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Borough President Scott Stringer, State Senator Tom Duane, and Assembly Member Brian Kavanagh.
Sunday’s call is “listen-only” but residents will be able to submit questions online upon registration, or during the call by speaking to a dedicated operator. Instructions will be provided. The call is estimated to last about an hour.
- Residents may register in advance at http://www.stpcvta.org/teletownhall/ Registration will close Saturday, December 17th at 2 PM.
- Early registration and submission of questions will help the call’s facilitators to ensure that widely held concerns are addressed during the Telephone Town Hall.
- We will call you at the phone number you have given when registering at http://stpcvta.org/teletownhall .
- When your phone rings on Sunday at 6:30pm — that is your invitation to join the call. It’s that simple — just stay on the line to listen to the Telephone Town Hall.
This November, the TA announced an agreement with Brookfield to develop a bid over the coming months to submit to CW Capital – the special servicer that represents senior bondholders. The bid would allow tenants who wish to buy their apartments at reasonable rates while offering protection from harassment or eviction to those who wish to remain as rent-stabilized renters. The proposal would also aim to create a set of permanently affordable rental units with help from government sources, improve maintenance and upkeep across the development, and preserve the community’s existing open space.
We encourage you to join us on Sunday to learn the facts and to lend your voice to this important and historic effort.
PS: You will also be receiving a special “invitation call” in the next few days from Senator Schumer letting you know about Sunday’s Telephone Town Hall. This is not the actual Telephone Town Hall — that is happening Sunday December 18th at 6:30pm— it is just another way to let as many residents as possible know about this opportunity to learn more and ask questions about the TA’s plan to bid. You can also press “1” when you receive this call to RSVP — but we encourage you to register at http://stpcvta.org/teletownhall .
