Tenants Association Intensifies Rent Law Renewal Battle with Testimony Before Housing Committee

The laws that protect both long-time and former market-rate (now rent stabilized) tenants—and also protect tenants from eviction without cause - expire in less than five months.

Speaking for the TA, Board of Directors member Steven Newmark,  asserted that renewal of the rent laws that expire on June 15th, is a necessity for the survival of Stuy Town and Peter Cooper as bastion of affordable housing for middle class. He also stressed the importance of preserving the Roberts decision which returned market rate apartments to rent stabilized status.  He highlights the desperate financial need of the least well-off residents, the still urgent need of better-off older retirees, and the need to provide affordability for the young working people who want to put down roots here and on whose talents the city depends.  Read the full testimony here.
