Trunk Room Closings Suspended in Response to Tenant Objections

Management of Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village has suspended until further notice the October 1st deadline for tenants to remove stored items from the Trunk Rooms in Stuyvesant Town and October 8th for tenants in Peter Cooper Village.

Tenants in 21 buildings in Stuyvesant Town and 5 buildings in Peter Cooper Village had been notified that Trunk Storage was being discontinued and that tenants had to retrieve their trunks and other items.

In August, many of the affected tenants filed Notice with Rose Associates asserting that Management is prohibited from discontinuing Trunk Room Service and that the loss of these Trunk Rooms constitutes violation and a reduction of services under the Rent Stabilization Code.

The Tenants Association coordinated the gathering of information and assisted the residents in opposing this action by Management. The decision on Management’s suspension of the deadline was delivered on Monday to the attorney representing the tenants, Tim Collins of Collins, Dobkin and Miller.  Mr. Collins called Managements’ suspension of the October 1st deadline “constructive.”

Commenting on suspension of the announced policy, Tenants Association president Al Doyle, said “Trunk room storage is an important service for tenants, and one that people have come to rely on. The TA is encouraged by Rose’s willingness to suspend of all trunk retrieval deadlines, and we look forward to further constructive dialogue to resolve this issue for good.”

“We appreciate that Rose Associates is suspending the trunk retrieval deadlines in order to give us time to work together toward a positive resolution of this issue,” said Council Member Dan Garodnick. “Management has expressed a sincere need to clean up the rooms after years of neglect, but fundamentally, the service needs to remain in place for the people who are relying on it. Thanks to the Tenants Association for their strong and clear advocacy on this issue. We are glad that Rose heard us—and we look forward to more productive conversations to sort this out.”

Tenants should note that while management has posted notices which say that trunk retrieval deadlines “have been suspended”, the final resolution of this issue is still to be determined. Pending resolution of this matter, it is possible that any trunks called up from storage may not be able to be returned.  We advise tenants to take no further action until this issue is conclusively resolved, and to contact the Tenants Association electronically at http://stpcvta.org/kb/contact with any questions.  Those without email may contact us at 1 (866) 290-9036.
