Volunteering For The Stuyvesant Town Peter Cooper Village Tenants Association:

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the ST/PCV Tenants Association.  This organization is run by a small few group of dedicated volunteers each with their own busy lives, commitments, and jobs.  No salaries are paid, and fiscal prudence with membership dues is always at the forefront of the Treasurer's mind.

What are the roles of a Volunteer?  Volunteering can be as simple as showing up for the one of the many RGB meetings, distributing handouts in a building, phone banking, talking and educating neighbors.  Other more complex duties involve attending community board meetings, performing administrative tasks or serving as an officer/trustee of the association.  See the full list below.

NOTE: If you don't have the Adobe Acrobat Reader, a common plug-in, you can download it here from Adobe's web site.
 I encourage everyone to have this plug-in.  The Acrobat reader will open up many more of the Internet's resources to you.  Most government forms are now made available in this format.  A good example of this are Tax forms.  Get the reader if you don't have it.  The Adobe Acrobat reader will help improve your browsing experience.

Statement on Confidentiality, Security and on the Fear of Reprisal/Retaliation

Some tenants have expressed reluctance to act because of fear of reprisal or retaliation, eviction, etc.
These are groundless fears.  Our system of basic freedoms and certain State and Federal laws protect tenants against this kind of behavior.  Large landlords would have much to lose if found engaging in  such practices.   So much so, that it is very unlikely anyone would be harassed for participating in or organizing in a tenant's association.  Several other large Tenants Associations do exist and so you and we are not alone.  These additional groups can be found on our Tenant Resources page.

The Tenants Association has pledged that no third party, Met-Life, nor agent of Met-Life shall ever have access to our member or volunteer lists.  Our lists are protected and encrypted with the highest level of commercially available data security software.

So with that in mind here are the ways in which you can help:

Basic but Vitally Important Roles

*   Dedicated Meeting Attendees
Volunteering in this way means to participate in or show up for a meeting where the higher the tenant turnout the better for the Tenant Association's key goals.  A meeting attendee is a person that is making a commitment to attend a meeting or an event designated as important by STPCVTA.  Your head is counted in targeted actions.  The larger the Dedicated Meeting Attendees pool is, the fewer the times you should be called upon.  When you are called upon it is important that you give strong consideration to clearing your schedule for that event.

*   Letter Campaign Writers
Designated Campaign Writers will be called upon to write one or more letters to politicians or candidates for office.   Letter writing to elected representative office holders and candidates, is still an effective means of political persuasion.  By nature we are busy people and so long as we are barely content we don't bother to sit down and write a letter.  Politicians know this, and thus pay higher attention to hand-written "in your own words" style letters.  This is a good way to give time if your not comfortable on the phone or in person.  In this capacity, a senior can be a giant help.  Seniors are have more  time to write.

*   E-Mail Campaign Writers
 Sending e-mail is easy, fast, and powerful.  Designated E-Mail Writers will be called upon to write one or more e-mails to politicians or candidates for office.  Elected representative office holders and candidates recognize this new trend, have adapted to it and expect it.  Each e-mail piece counts.

Did you know that by counting the number of yea and nay e-mails received on a given subject a politicians decision is often influenced favorably?  Some even deploy analysis software to ensure the e-mails are unique and go so far as to produce tallies for quick assessment by their support staff.

*   Fax Bank Volunteers
A variation of the Letter Campaign Writers, Fax Bank Volunteers can help fax scores of the hand written and e-mail letters to elected representative's offices.   Fax Bank Volunteers will be called upon to send messages deemed as important to fellow members and volunteers that can not be reached by e-mail or phone or prefer to be contacted by fax..

*   Phone Bank Volunteers
Dedicated Phone Bankers are people that are comfortable on the phone and enjoy calling people.  This can be a tough job due to some people's distaste for telemarketers.  Phone bank volunteers would be called upon to rally others, pass on important messages to those that lack e-mail, or participate in active phone banking of targeted political messages.

*   Building Leader
Building Leaders are the key part of the communications arm of the organization.  Building Leaders help coordinate  TA activities such as distribution and membership drives.

*   Back up Building Leader
Building Leaders may be away, need time off, get sick etc., so it will be important to have a back up Building Leader.  This can be the Building Leader from next building or someone from a different building.

*   Building Group Manager
A Building Group Manager is responsible for about 7-10 buildings.  A Building Group Leader's main responsibility  is to organize his/her group of buildings by ensuring that each of their buildings has a Building Leader and at least one flyer distributor.  The Building Group Manager also is a drop off distribution point for complex wide communications.  By breaking the two building complexes into smaller groups this large task is distributed across 12 people instead of just two or three.
